Founded in 1826 as a center for lead mining, Galena's restored homes and commercial buildings still echo from the early prosperity, making way for a deep, rich history that still lies there, attracting guests from all over the world. Over 85% of Galena is recorded in the National Register of Historic Places. The town's name is actually the technical term for sulphide of lead.
And as if that wasn't enough history for the little mining town, in 1860, Ulysses S. Grant came to Galena to work in his father's leather goods store. After gaining fame in the Civil War, Grant returned to Galena in 1865 where a group of citizens presented the General with a handsome, furnished home. He returned to the home several times during his Presidency and again before he died of throat cancer. The Grant home is now a state historic site.
